OVER EASIER WRONG CHOICES”

The right thing to do is often the choice that puts a knot in your stomach and makes you uncomfortable...but, it’s the right choice for all.

At the recent Scituate Town Financial Meeting we witnessed your School Committee and Town Council make the hard RIGHT CHOICES with across-the-board budget cuts to comply with the state mandated 5% cap.

Cutting the budgets of Schools, Police, Highway, Administration and specialty programs was difficult. Your elected officials, in support of the cuts, knew full well that it had a direct impact on their own children, family, friends and supporters. The easier wrong choice would be to set a precedent to spend down our fund balance.

This has the potential to undermine the financial stability of our town, thus increasing our bond interest rates and that will affect all Scituate taxpayers for years to come.  Many more difficult and unpleasant financial decisions will need to be made in the future. 

Our state is in financial peril. Why? The majority party for years has caved into political pressures and consistently made the easier wrong choices. As a result revenue sharing for cities and towns has been cut and will be cut further. Tax caps have been imposed on all local cities and towns to force some municipalities that are on the verge of insolvency to make the harder right choice. The State financial problems are only getting worse and will continue to strain local governments.

I urge you to continue to elect Town Council, School Committee and Town Officers who put Scituate First...
